Blake Shelton has shared a heartfelt tribute to his friend Joe Bonsall, who recently passed away. Joe Bonsall was a member of The Oak Ridge Boys, a well-known country and gospel band. Blake, who is 48 years old, posted a picture of himself performing with The Oak Ridge Boys, although the exact date and location of the photo are unknown.
On his Instagram Stories, Blake expressed his sadness, saying, “I’m heartbroken to hear of my friend Joe Bonsall’s death. I’ve NEVER seen Joe when he wasn’t smiling and completely full of life. He loved singing more than anyone I’ve ever met. His family and his @theoakridgeboys brothers are in my thoughts and prayers. Yesterday, we lost a very important person.”
Joe Bonsall died from Alzheimer’s disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS, which is a neuromuscular disease that currently has no cure and affects the body’s voluntary muscles. Joe had been battling the illness for four years and announced his condition to fans in January 2024.
Joe is survived by his wife Mary Ann, his two daughters Jennifer and Sabrina, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A spokesperson for the Bonsall family shared that Joe was also an author of 11 books, including a memoir titled “I See Myself,” which was released in November. Joe loved working on his farm and was a devoted fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. His family expressed hope that they would see him again in heaven.
Upon revealing his diagnosis, Joe announced that he would be leaving The Oak Ridge Boys. The remaining members of the band are William Lee Golden, Richard Sterban, and Duane Allen. The Oak Ridge Boys are famous for songs like “Elvira,” “Come On In,” “Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight,” and “Bobbie Sue.” The band was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015 and has won five Grammy Awards.
Joe enjoyed listening to music, reading, and writing. He played the banjo, which was his favorite instrument. The Oak Ridge Boys were originally formed by Curly Kinsey, Lon “Deacon” Freeman, Wally Fowler, and Little Johnny New. Although none of the original members are still part of the band, The Oak Ridge Boys continue to perform. They are currently on the road with their “American Made: The Farewell Tour,” which runs until December 8.
